A new gold rush? How AI is transforming San Francisco

Los Angeles Times

On a sunny day in San Francisco, along the city's waterfront, families dived into the wacky world of artificial intelligence inside the Exploratorium museum. Visitors made shadow puppets for AI to identify, used AI to generate songs, asked chatbots questions and faced off with AI in a game in which players tried to draw images that only humans would recognize. A giant robot hand moved around and people peered into a video game chip. They jotted down their hopes and worries about AI on cards displayed in the museum. Hope: AI will cure cancer.

Mark Zuckerberg Is Expanding His Secretive Hawaii Compound. Part of It Sits Atop a Burial Ground

WIRED

As a child, Julian Ako would visit his maternal great-grandfather's home near Pilaa Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, where he and his family would gather edible fungi that grow on kukui trees and collect seaweed and fish from the reef. For about a decade, that land has belonged to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is constructing a massive compound at an estimated cost that exceeds 300 million. WIRED can now reveal that Zuckerberg's property is atop a burial site: Ako's great-grandmother and her brother were buried on the land. After months of discussions with a Zuckerberg representative, Ako was successfully able to gain access to the property and identify and register the graves with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, though he was not able to locate remains of other ancestors, who he believes could be buried on the property. In a report shared with WIRED, the state agency also confirmed "the probability (based on oral testimony) of additional burial sites."

Robot lawn mower deals ahead of Prime Day 2025

PCWorld

Achieving that perfectly manicured lawn is a whole lot less time-consuming now that a robot can do the job for you. And over the long term, a robot lawn mower will cost less than hiring a landscaper--and it won't expect a tip every week. Top-of-the-line models cost a pretty penny, but they can climb slopes and handle very large yards (we're talking acres of grass). While early robot lawn mowers required you to lay down a boundary wire to prevent them from wandering out of your yard, each of mowers listed here use advanced navigation technology that eliminates the need for any wires. The good news is that we've already spotted some great deals on robot lawn mowers ahead of Amazon's Prime Day sale, and we expect there will be more when the sale actually gets underway on July 8.

How 432 robots are relocating a 7,500-ton historic building

FOX News

A few hundred robots moved a buildng complex covering about 43,400 square feet. Shanghai is no stranger to jaw-dropping feats of engineering. In the latest example, a Shanghai historic building moved by robots is capturing global attention. The relocation of the complex in Huayang, a Shikumen-style building weighing about 7,500 metric tons (approximately 8,267 U.S. tons) and covering roughly 43,400 square feet, is truly rewriting the rules. This ambitious project is powered by an army of 432 small robots that are moving the massive structure about 33 feet each day to make way for a new underground development.

Robot cleans 32,000 square feet of beach per hour

FOX News

Bebot delivers a smarter, cleaner and more sustainable way to keep shorelines pristine. Those people scanning the beach with metal detectors, hoping for a lucky find, might not be thrilled about what's next. While beaches are where we unwind, play, and connect with nature, they're also under constant threat from plastic pollution and human debris. That's where BeBot comes in. BeBot, an all-electric beach-cleaning robot developed in Italy by Niteko Robotics in partnership with 4ocean and Poralu Marine, is quietly transforming environmental technology.

2025 Home of the Future Awards: 25 products that'll improve your everyday life

Popular Science

At the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago, an exhibit called The Home of Tomorrow laid out a vision of a futuristic living space. It included outlandish predictions including personal helicopter pads, but it also foreshadowed central air conditioning, automatic dishwashers, and other innovations that have become integral parts of modern life. As we envision the home of the future, it's easy to get caught up in sci-fi-inspired predictions of fully autonomous homes serviced by robotic butlers and disembodied virtual assistants that remove the humanity from our living spaces. Here at Popular Science, we reject that vision. For the inaugural Home of the Future Awards, we have selected 25 products that augment life at home by making it more efficient, affordable, accessible, and--ultimately--more enjoyable. We test, preview, and evaluate hundreds of products per year and these products deserve a chance to cohabitate with you and the people who matter to you. A flat top grill is one of the most versatile ways to cook just about anything from pancakes to burgers, but temperature control is key.

Best robotic pool cleaners 2025: Expert picks of big, small, and cordless options

PCWorld

Cleaning a swimming pool ranks right up there with scrubbing bathroom floors, but the consequences of neglecting either chore are equally unhealthy. Fortunately, in the age of robots you can ditch the laborious chores of manually skimming leaves from your pool's surface and scrubbing algae from its walls and floors. Invest in a modern robotic pool cleaner and let that machine do that dirty work for you. These labor-saving pool bots come in various shapes and sizes with diverse capabilities, not to mention a wide array of prices. The most sophisticated models go for 2,000 or more.

Explingo: Explaining AI Predictions using Large Language Models

Zytek, Alexandra, Pido, Sara, Alnegheimish, Sarah, Berti-Equille, Laure, Veeramachaneni, Kalyan

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Explanations of machine learning (ML) model predictions generated by Explainable AI (XAI) techniques such as SHAP are essential for people using ML outputs for decision-making. We explore the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform these explanations into human-readable, narrative formats that align with natural communication. We address two key research questions: (1) Can LLMs reliably transform traditional explanations into high-quality narratives? and (2) How can we effectively evaluate the quality of narrative explanations? To answer these questions, we introduce Explingo, which consists of two LLM-based subsystems, a Narrator and Grader. The Narrator takes in ML explanations and transforms them into natural-language descriptions. The Grader scores these narratives on a set of metrics including accuracy, completeness, fluency, and conciseness. Our experiments demonstrate that LLMs can generate high-quality narratives that achieve high scores across all metrics, particularly when guided by a small number of human-labeled and bootstrapped examples. We also identified areas that remain challenging, in particular for effectively scoring narratives in complex domains. The findings from this work have been integrated into an open-source tool that makes narrative explanations available for further applications.
